second beach

This morning we wanted to get out for one last beach day before the summer's end.  We woke up early, packed and drove out to Second Beach in Newport, RI.  At our house the weather was warm, sunny and humid but as we got closer to the beach the weather worsened.  It was foggy, windy and cool by the time we got to the beach.  We drove over a bridge to get to Newport and felt like we were driving in the clouds.

We decided to park and give it a try anyway.  We didn't put Bennett into his swim gear yet.  As cool as it was we didn't know if we wanted to go into the water.  There were a lot of people going in though which was surprising.

I was cold so I sat in the beach chair bundled up with a towel while Nick and Bennett wondered around chasing after a sea gull.

Bennett was loving the beach despite the chilly weather and the high winds.  Until he rubbed his right eye with his sandy hand.  We panicked.  I had no idea what to do because he was crying so hard.  We grabbed some water and kept trying to wash out his eye.  We took him to the shower area and did the same as well.  He hated the showers and that made things worse.  Finally after what seemed like forever (about 30 minutes in actuality) he calmed down.  He wasn't opening his eyes though.  We were worried he was really hurt.  I got out a snack for him and he ate it with his eyes shut.  Although, he was getting braver since he opened his left eye completely.  He was struggling with his right.  Eventually the sand worked it's way out and he was back to his old self.

We decided maybe it's better we go play by the water so we didn't have anymore accidents like this.  Best decision ever!  The water was so warm.  We felt like we were walking into a hot tub.  No wonder so many people were swimming.

Bennett was loving all the waves.  He was yelling: "Wow!" every time one got close and laughing hysterically.

His favorite thing to do was to run away from the waves turn around and run right back in.  It was hilarious to watch.

The beach was still empty so he had plenty of space to do his "circles."

It was getting warmer the longer we stayed.  The fog was moving away but it was still overcast.  We could actually see the entire beach now.

What's a beach trip without a few selfies?

I knew it was time for a snack and some lunch when Bennett decided to lay down on the beach.  Or, did he just want to do some yoga?

Or, perhaps some beach babe photos for his portfolio?

While I readied the lunch, Bennett got to play in the sand for a bit with daddy.

He loves laying in the sand especially in any hole in the sand.

Of course, right as we were ready to eat Bennett got some sand in his eyes again.  This time daddy took him to the shower to rinse off and he recovered very quickly.  I love eating lunch outdoors!

The beach really started to fill up and get warm at this point.  The sun was out, the fog has lifted and the wind had calmed a bit.

We had to leave soon because we had evening plans.  So we played in the ocean for another half hour or so before packing up to head home.  Bennett chased the waves again.

He is such a brave little boy.  He wanted to go deeper and deeper into the water.

Too bad we have to leave right when things got sunny.  It was only ok because we were heading into town for the best ice cream in Newport, RI.  Bennett wanted to drive us home... naked...  Sorry Bennett, but you need your license first!

We were happy that we stayed at the beach even though it was so gloomy this morning.  It turned out to be a really fun trip.  So far we liked this beach the best out of all the beaches we visited this summer.  We will definitely be coming back here next year.
